The prison roof became much more clear in a 2013 Google Earth update. The website for “The Quiet People” said that “travellers on Highway 5 are greeted by a peculiar sight of people-like figures.” According to Time magazine, Kaplan's wife had visited the prison a day before the escape with a male companion who seemed to be scoping out the prison yard. He made it to California and was never recaptured, no satellite imagery required. New York businessman Joel David Kaplan, who was serving a sentence for killing his business partner while in Mexico, fled the prison by helicopter. The first, made famous by the 1975 movie "Breakout," took place at the Santa Martha Acatitla prison in Mexico. However, helicopter escapes have happened. More recently, in the summer of 2017, the prison was hit with a series of brawls involving homemade weapons, according to USA Today (opens in new tab).Īround 2006, the images of Elmira on Google Earth were very low-resolution, reportedly over concerns that satellite imagery would be used to stage helicopter escapes from the prison - though it may just have been poor-quality satellite imagery, because the surrounding neighborhoods weren't particularly sharp, either. In 2003, two inmates, Timothy Morgan and Timothy Vail, made paper-mache models of themselves using their own hair, left them snuggled in their beds, and escaped through a hole they'd made with a sledgehammer through the ceiling of their cell. The Elmira Correctional Facility in Elmira, New York, is a maximum-security prison with a wild history. The Elmira Correctional Facility, New York ![]() Until 2013, the palace, as seen on Google Earth, looked like something out of an old Atari game. The office building of the country's kind was once painstakingly blurred pixel-by-pixel with a much more delicate hand than usually used on the country's satellite imagery. Most of the censored areas in the Netherlands used the large, pixelated mask still seen in Noordwijk aan Zee to obscure sensitive sites, but Noordeinde Palace in The Hague got a more personal touch. (There are some spots, like a blob in Noordwijk aan Zee, where new satellite imagery has yet to become available since the law change.) According to CNN, Dutch law changed in 2013 to lift this censorship, and the Netherlands have become considerably clearer since. On Google Earth, the country was dotted with pixelated splotches covering military bases, government buildings and more. The Dutch are rather famous in satellite-imagery-loving circles for their enthusiastic pixelation. So more and more people are coming forward and telling their stories and shifting the narrative to one that is more forthright and accurate. Even The Ellen Show got caught out – despite being the “Happy Place” was anything but for anyone actually doing the day to day drudgery that kept the show running year after year. The good news from the #metoo movement and the subsequent outings of sexual harassers and now the bullying class with the likes of Scott Rudin finally being kneecapped is that the facades are falling. So my main point to this particular question is that many outsiders don’t really know just how much a performer’s, studio’s, entity’s “brand” is actually a false front to some of the really brutal tactics they employ while perpetuating their success, whether through take no prisoners negotiating, bullying, sexual harassment (yes, it still goes on!), and just obvious hypocrisy when it comes to the societal issues they claim to champion as a cause. Through their PR managed answers for public consumption they help perpetuate a brand and idea of the industry that is false for the most part – no matter if one is dealing with the Studio system or independent film scene. So my perspective on the industry comes from an outsider place and also one in which I can speak a bit more freely than many due to their perceived ties to prospective employers or investors. What amuses me and also annoys me when I come across the sunny side up answers many give for publication is often times these very same people when in a one on one discussion will spew the most awful rhetoric about the industry, the studio system, the actors they have to deal with and on and on. So I’ve had some degree of success bringing my ideas, scripts and films to life and to audiences although I only have what I would consider a fledgling career. I’ve had films at the Telluride, Tribeca, Seattle, Sydney, Outfest, Frameline, Hawaii and many other Int’l Film Festivals and won awards at many of them and even got nominated for Best Short Film (The Visitor) at the Australian Film Awards. ![]() I’ve made films in Los Angeles, Mexico City, France, and Australia – all independently financed out of the Studio system. I’ve been a filmmaker since the late nineties and before that worked as an assistant at some of the major studios, PR firms and an independent distribution company before starting my own company with a business partner who I had worked for in the past. ![]() When I read articles and interviews about the film industry and I come across this kind of discussion I’m usually disappointed by the rote answers that put an empty, generic, positive spin on the workings of Hollywood and the independent film industry. "It was a relationship that definitely took over more than a decade of my life," she says. It's difficult to condense the entirety of a 10-year relationship and its aftermath into the confines of a song, even when it extends to close to seven minutes, but the way the track's texture builds slowly from a single harp to a wall of percussion has an effect that echoes the message of forging a path through adversity and finding a way to glow. "I'm telling the story of going through a challenging time and how was I able to overcome that." "Honestly, the lyrical content comes from an abusive marriage that ended in divorce," she says. "Glow" is an avant-garde, ethereal pop song inspired by the struggles the artist faced in a decade-long relationship. Finally, Garland's first single has arrived. For years, Jess Garland has told people that she was "working on it." The longtime Dallas multi-instrumentalist and music teacher has spent most of her career playing in other peoples' bands while quietly working on her own sound. ![]() ![]() This fairly unique-looking helmet is the perfect choice for all-mountain riders wanting to be comfortable and protected wherever they choose to ride. The ventilation is well placed to funnel air through the MOD3, keeping your head a comfortable temperature, and should you wish you can chose to have the optional MIPS protection liner included. You can get the MOD3 dialled into the specific size of your head thanks to its Boa Fit tightening system, and securing it is made even easier by the magnetic buckle on the chinstrap, which you can easily open and close one-handed even when wearing gloves. This allows you to change the helmet’s brim depending on the size of the goggles you rock, ensuring you always get seamless helmet/goggle integration. The chin strap should be comfortable too – if it isn’t, you’ll know about it after a few laps – and the venting needs to be sufficient to prevent you from cooking, or your goggles from fogging. UPDATE: Check out our review of the 2018/2019 Best Snowboard Helmets here I know that internal architecture contributes to sound quality, so this is TBD, but it should be on par with what I have experienced, and I have had no complaints with the Echo.Īdd to that the "Midas Designed" preamps. The converters are equivalent/slightly better speked than the ones used in the Echo Layla 3G/Audiofire (115db dynamic range ). What about sound quality? I think it will be the same, maybe improved depending on the quality of the pres. This should help should I continue to mix ITB. It has LED scribble strips to show the track names, and dedicated buttons for transport controls. Eight faders can be used to control mix and program automation in the DAW. The OTHER draw of the X32 is that it has a Mackie Control built in. The X32 has a 7" TFT monitor built in and dedicated hardware controls for effects. This should solve all the physical and routing management issues I deal with. It works as a giant virtual patch bay and gives ultimate flexibility in signal routing. The X32 with its built in effects, totally fits the bill here. This leads to alot of extra BS I have to deal with when experimenting with sounds while tracking (mic placement, ets), and I like to work in an uncluttered space. In my experience, DAW plug-ins are not practical for guitar tracking because of potential latency and having to deal with plugin & track management in the DAW. Also, the analog EQ and compression settings are often changing. The problem is that once I change a configuration, or use the mic pre for a different source, if I want to go back, it will often require some physical cabling. Because I track /reamp guitars in isolation with multi mics, I usually prefer to have some tracking effects to the monitors, EQ, compression, reverb. The biggest time waster / buzz kill in my project studio is dealing with patching hardware for various recording scenarios. But then I looked at the biggest issues I face in my project studio. I was also considering a UA Apollo, for improved sound quality (subjective) and easy tracking effects. Solutions I was looking at prior to the X32 was an API A2D to improve quality of recordings, and get a punchier API sound. I am replacing an Echo Layla 3G and a bunch of low/mid level rack gear. ![]() ![]() I have placed an order for an X32 to use primarily in a project studio.
